The synergy of systems work of Jette and John Nieland

When Jette and John Nieland met each other, a special synergy started to grow out of the relationship. On the professional level new ideas started to grow. Reflections between the background Jette has in clinical and organizational psychology and biology together with Johns background in immunology, biochemistry, biology and medicine evolved in new ideas and new levels of understanding how systems work together. On the basis of this work Meta-IQ was founded.

Presentation on systemic thinking approach in the treatment of brain diseases

Presentation given at: Center for Psychiatric Research, Aarhus University Hospital Risskov

Jette Goller Kloth Nieland has a background in systemic theory and systemic thinking. It forms the basic values of her work. She is influenced by the scientist Gregory Bateson, who sees systems as an ecology of ideas. His contribution is decisive to the understanding of systems and the communication going on between individuals and their surroundings. He used his entire life trying to answer the question: “What is the mind?” This question has always been of great interest to Jette. She has over the last 15 – 20 years worked with it from different angles, in her clinical work with patients trying to understand different diseases. Basically she is trying to understand how systems work together through different kind of communication on biological, personal/individual, relational and organizational levels.

John Dirk Nieland has a background in Biochemistry and immunology. In his thinking he always used models to describe how different things hang together. He thinks as they say out of the box, combining approaches from different specialties. With his background in Immunology and biochemistry he saw that different inflammatory diseases could not be treated with simply treating the immunologic part. At the moment for all autoimmune diseases or also called inflammatory diseases there are no treatments that cure. Therefore, he started to explore other specialties for clues where there could be a new angle on the explanation of these diseases.
Diseases are often seen in a cause effect relationship. This means you bump your head in a door so you have a headache. However, for many diseases this is a far too simple way of thinking. Jette and John therefore, explored a systemic way of thinking. In systemic thinking one tries to look at a problem from above and tries to identify all factors involved in the problem, identify how these factors influence each other and how they give meaning to each other. When they applied this approach to brain diseases, they could identify 3 factors that seem to be involved in brain diseases like Alzheimer, Depression, Multiple sclerosis etc.
They found that in these diseases not only neurological factors but also immunological and metabolic factors are involved. The medicines that are developed for these different diseases seem to focus predominantly on neurological or in a few cases immunological treatment. As Jette and John saw the synergy between neurology, immunology and metabolism, they explored to see, what the effect of treating brain disease with medicine that changes the metabolism would have. In literature they found several hints that influencing metabolism could have an effect on these diseases.
In follow up experiments they collaborated with Dr. Ove Wiborg of the university in Aarhus to test the drug M-IQ 001 in the treatment of memory loss and M-IQ 002 in the treatment of depression. The results from these studies confirmed their approach. Dr. Ove Wiborg was, to start with, very skeptic of the studies, but confessed when he had the data “he had never seen such good results in such studies before”.
