07/03-05/05

Director of research at Medigene. Heading a group of 2 scientists and 2 technicians. Responsible for research collaborations with universities, research institutes and other companies. The department is performing research on drug metabolism, mode of action, biomarker analysis, vaccine and therapy improvement. Setting up new basic research in immunologic, and mechanistic areas. Identifying potential new target indications, molecules in tumor, viral infection and autoimmune diseases.

01/00-06/03

Associate director preclinical development, head of the immunology group at Medigene, consisting of 5 scientists and 9 technicians. Participating in core teams of products that are being developed for tumor treatments in melanoma and cervical carcinoma. Initiating and directing new research on immunization strategies, improvement of existing vaccines. Coordinating collaborations with outside university institutions and clinical research organizations. Presenting Medigene on meetings and at institutions like WHO, Paul Ehrlich Institute (Germany), MCA (England). Representing the firm in project teams with partnering firms. Provide scientific support for clinical department, process development CROs and for physicians participating in clinical trials.

07/98-12/99

Senior scientist at Medigene Martinsried Germany. Responsible for setting up assays to test immune responses in patients which are involved in clinical trials. Testing of the immunogenicity of chimeric virus like particles of human papilloma virus in mice. Development of in vitro biological activity/potency assays to test the biological activity of chimeric virus like particles. Providing immunological advice for clinical department, co-author investigator brochures, scientific and task reports.

07/96-06/98

Post doc at Loyola University Medical Center Chicago USA, Cancer Immunology of Prof. Dr. W.M. Kast . Research on the mechanism of stimulation of the immune system through immunization with virus like particles, and research on the down regulation of the immune system in cancer patients and tumor bearing mice. Setup of the SCID/NOD transplant model in which SCID/NOD mice were transplanted with PBL of tumor patients, and subsequently challenged with tumor cells from the same patient. This model could be used to test treatment modalities in a syngeneic human/mouse hybrid tumor model.

01/92-06/96

Ph.D at the Free University in Amsterdam the Netherlands, Medical Faculty. Graduate student in the Department of Immunology of Prof. Dr. A.M. Kruisbeek at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Research on inducing and breaking tolerance with the help of synthetic peptides as a model for autoimmune diseases, self tolerance, and lack of tumor vaccine efficacy. Research on genetically modified tumors to improve tumor immunogenicity by inducing the tumor cells to express costimulatory molecules like CD40, CD70, CD80 and CD86 and compare the mode of action and pharmacokinetics of these costimulatory molecules on CD4 and CD8 T cell response induction. Furthermore, a system was developed with which alternative costimulatory molecules were cloned by personally developed “high” throughput expression cloning methods.

10/88-12/91

Worked as a technician in the department of Immunology of Prof. Dr. C.J.M. Melief at The Netherlands Cancer Institute. Research on spleen dendritic cells, development of dendritic cell specific monoclonal antibodies. Research on the generation of in vitro primary T cell responses against viruses and synthetic peptides using mouse lymphocytes. Research on differences between allogenic and syngenic immune responses, role of T cells in this process.
10/86-10/88 Worked as a technician for the Netherlands Dairy Syndicate. Research on the difference in fertility of breading bulls in the Netherlands.

09/84-10/86

Worked as a technician in the department of Immunology of Prof. Dr. C.J.M. Melief at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Research on chromosomal aberrations in newly developed B- and T-cell lymphoma's in mice.
